Shutter Island Poster Analysis

Connotations and denotations:

The red writing of the title has been formatted in bold, rough, capital letters and is bright against the back background composing it to stand out to the viewers.  This red writing signifies blood and terror suggesting it's of a thriller genre. Furthermore, the large image of the man is half hidden in the dark with a bright light shining on the other half of his face. It also shows a hand holding a flame which is the apparent source of light in this poster and is the focal point due to it being the brightest image and it contrasts against the darkness of the background.  The lighting on this man creates a sense of suspense, fear and danger to his character in this film. in addition, there is an overall dark colour scheme. The dark colour scheme connotes that it is a horror film and plays along with the dark theme of the film. Moreover, there is also a tagline that read 'someone is missing'. This tagline creates a sense of suspense, tension and mystery for the viewers and would make the viewers want to find out more. Rough and stormy weather is seen to be apparent in this poster. The bad weather consequently represents a depressing atmosphere and anticipates something bad will happen. Lastly, the island is positioned under the face and presented to look isolated in the centre of the poster. This isolated island connotes the typical thriller/horror type film consisting of an isolated place suggesting the characters might be trapped here, and links back to the title of the film.
