Children of Men Poster Analysis

Connotations and Denotations

The writing in the top left corner of the poster has been produced in a bold, red font making it more eye catching and pleasing. Additionally, this poster also displays the setting of the film by having 2027 in a large font. This connotes that it is a futuristic film and a science-fiction one too. The red writing further adds to the elements of danger, fear and jeopardy. The title has been written in a large, bold white font which contrasts and stands out against the black background. Underneath this title, there is a small image of a baby in a womb of blood which signifies that young children are likely to die in this film. The main actors starring in Children of Men have also been listed above the title in white but in a smaller font evidently showing they're of less importance compared to the title of the film. There is a mans face shown behind a broken pane of glass that surrounds only his face in an almost heart like shape.  Furthermore, there is also a bright light shining onto the protagonists face against the dark background, implying he has a big part to play in this film. The broken glass represents a sense of violence in the film along with a shattered reality. Moreover, the heart shape outlining his face could symbolize his broken heart. The bright light connotes that the character may be an anti-hero with a dark past. The man appears to be scruffy looking with a dark background surrounding him which signifies it’s a horror film with a dark theme.
